Understanding the nature of man and the state of nature

  • What do we mean when we talk about the nature of a virus or bacteria?
  • What do we mean when we talk about the nature of predatory animals like lions, leopards, crocodiles etc?
  • What do you understand by “the nature of a thing”?
  • What do we mean by “the nature of man"?
  • What do you think the nature of man is?  What is he motivated by?  What drives him?  Is he inherently altruistic or selfish?
  • Consider the meaning of the word “state” – here are some synonyms – condition, situation, position, circumstances. Imagine a situation where people exist at their most basic characteristics or nature.  As if they were just put there as fully grown beings but they have no idea of what right and wrong is.  They would have no knowledge of anything that prescribes a way of being, or a way of life.  They would have no idea of what we consider to be good or bad, they would not even understand what a law, regulation is.  Using the word the “state” in the context of the synonyms above, how would you describe such a situation?
  • As discussed this in class – how do philosophers describe the above situation?
  • Considering your description of the nature of man, if there was a situation or circumstance where people could exist at their most basic nature – what do you think the conditions or state of nature would be like and why?
